I've negotiated a good price on a 2009 328xi, but now discovered I would like xenon lights. I was told you can buy an aftermarket kit and have them installed, but I'm not sure that the most reliable way to do it.

Am I better off ordering a 2010 with the xenon lights or would an aftermarket kit be just as reliable and safe to other drivers, etc? I've negotiated a good price on a 2009 328xi, but now discovered I would like xenon lights.

If you don't mind waiting, I would just order a 2010 with the options you want. Get xenon's put in by BMW at a cost of $2,000 for the parts + $700 for the installation.

Get a “halogen bulb replacement” that is a decent representation of xenon's with the inability to have halo's as daytime running lights and other quirks. For the E90, I suggest a set of OEM xenon which will be a direct installation on your car.

You will need to have the ECU coded for the xenon setup to make it work properly, but it can be done. The aftermarket housings for these cars are poor quality and not worth your time.

While the xenon's are cool, they don't give much better coverage when driving at night. The adaptive function (lights 'turn' as you turn the car) is another thing that you can live without as the halogen cars have side illumination that brightens the corner you're turning into anyway.

Both the xenon's and the halogen's offer angel eye halos when the car wakes up (hit 'open door' on the remote) and when the headlights are on at night (all 4 angel's light as well as the outside headlamps) so no biggie there either. The biggest deal to me (and most others) with the halogen's is the loss of the angel eyes as daytime running lights.

If you keep your DR's off or don't care that you don't have halo's during the daytime, be happy with the halogen's and use the $2,000 towards other options. While the xenon's are cool, they don't give much better coverage when driving at night.

Even a 4-year-old that is partly blind could tell the difference from half a mile away. However, if those bulbs give you AE DLR perhaps they are worth it.

There was only 1 in the whole US similar to the spec I wanted with folding rear seats, but it had gray leather. They are wonderful to have in the country at night, you can see so much and so far that normal halogens just can not match.

Add that with the turning ability, really does make them worth that extra coinage. Those lights are only meant to be used for turning into parking spots, etc.

My xenon headlights seem to aim a tad bit too low. You can get some nice Halogen bulbs if you choose, but I've never seen a test of some Xenon colored Halogens that could match the light output of a clear bulb.

Full disclosure: my old eyes aren't as good as they once were, but are 20/20 with correction. Although some newer luxury vehicles are now starting to come with LEDs or His by default, over 95% of cars on the road, old and new, are still equipped with halogen bulb technology.

Many drivers are tired and frustrated with the dull, yellowish light output from halogen headlight bulbs and as a result, we frequently get asked: Can I put LED or HID bulbs in my stock halogen headlight? In this article, we’ll dive into this question in greater detail, how halogen headlight conversion kits work and other alternatives available to you.

So the bulbs will lock in perfectly to your housing and connect right to your car or truck’s power harness. The HID bulbs will lock in tightly to your housing and connect perfectly to your vehicle’s power harness.

So now you know that you can put LED and HID bulbs in your stock halogen headlights and understand how it works on a high level, you are likely wondering how much these kits cost. LED headlight bulbs can be found for as little as $60 per set and can go up to the $200-$300 price range, however, you can find high-quality, reliable and durable kits for around $120.

They often operate on very high wattage which can damage your headlight and vehicle’s power supply, the light quality and distance are poor, they will burn out after a few months and come with little to no warranty. All our products are built with the highest quality standard, the latest technology, and operate at the same wattage as stock bulbs.

They are often terrible quality, last only a few months and will likely damage your headlight assembly and/or your vehicle’s power supply. Like LEDs, high-quality HID bulbs will match your car or truck’s power specifications and will produce incredible light output.

All our products are built with the highest quality standard, the latest technology, and operate at the same wattage as stock bulbs. When it comes to improving your car or truck’s light output by switching to LED or His, there is another alternative, retrofitting your entire headlight assemblies.

Retrofitting means completely replacing your headlight assemblies with new ones that carry HID or LED bulbs by default. Although more expensive and will likely require the expertise of a mechanic or performance shop, retrofitting your headlight assemblies is definitely a great option.

LED headlight conversion kits are only designed to work with stock halogen bulbs and assemblies. HID headlight conversion kits are only designed to work with stock halogen bulbs and assemblies.

High-quality LED or HID conversion kits will not damage your headlight assemblies or your vehicle’s power supply. There's the obvious fact: dimming or burned out headlight bulbs mean you can 't see the road and other drivers can 't see you.

Don’t wait until your bulbs are burned out, which is not only unsafe but also places you at risk for being pulled over. For many vehicles these days, one bulb serves for both high and low beams.

Pro Tip: Replace both headlights at the same time for improved visibility. Common types include halogen, Xenon (or HID), and LED on select new vehicles.

Xenon lights are brighter, have a lower operating temperature, and last longer. Also keep in mind that HID bulbs can be a bit pricier and professional installation may be recommended.

LED : LEDs (light emitting diodes) have an advantage over halogen in that they draw less power to operate, run cooler than halogen lights, and last longer. If your newer vehicle came equipped with LED headlights from the factory, you’re probably not even reading this article.

Consult your owner's manual for the specific type of replacement bulbs you can use for your vehicle. Pro Tip : Remember to add your vehicle when shopping with Advance to see a selection of bulbs that are right for you.

Xenon lights have a distinctive white or bluish-white glow and are regarded as the ultimate in visibility and luxury. You’ll need to install a Xenon conversion kit, however, which will take a few hours and several hundred dollars.

Headlights with a whiter color temperature emit a beam that more closely resembles natural light. You'll likely get a better quality product than the standard bulbs used by a shop and save money on labor, too.

Even if you aren't interested in changing out the headlights yourself, you'll still get a better value if you purchase the bulbs and ask you mechanic to install them for you. You'll need to remove the film and grime on your lenses that occurs naturally over time.

Either way, cleaning your headlights shouldn't take more than an hour or two and could save you from hazardous nighttime driving. Changing out your headlights is an easy and inexpensive way to ensure a safer driving experience.
