In addition, its 95 acres of displays make it Texas largest zoo in terms of land mass. Check out the Cheetah Encounter, Lemur Lookout, the Wilds of Africa Adventure Safari, and the children's zoo, and take a ride on the T. rex Express mini-train for an adventure-filled day.

When you think of Texas, what comes to mind probably includes cowboys, ranches, Gulf Coast beaches, and wide expanses of prairie.

The zoo, which has approximately 1 million visitors annually, is one of the top in the country, and houses more than 7,000 animals in natural habitat exhibits. New in 2018 is the African Savanna, a 10-acre, mixed-species space with giraffe feedings, underwater hippo-viewing, multiple yards for southern black rhinos, and exotic bird aviaries.

Must-see animals are the Asian elephants, Komodo dragons, African lions, black rhinos, gorillas, and hippos. There are multiple eateries and gift shops on site, and a 14,000-square-foot children’s splash pad provides PRE- or post- zoo fun.

The zoo has more than 6,000 animals, and sees more than 2 million guests each year. Aquatic animals include giant Pacific octopus and moon jellyfish, and endangered species include the Houston toad, Panamanian golden frog, Asian elephants, western lowland gorillas, okapi (forest giraffes), orangutans, and southern white rhinos.

There are over 350 animals across 100 different species at the nonprofit zoo, and annual visitors number more than 237,000. The zoo has tigers, lions, black bears, monkeys, lemurs, emu, bobcats, longhorns, snakes, and more.

There are 377 species of animals in the park, which is divided into four zoo geographic areas: Africa, Asia, Tropical America, and Indo-Australia. The park also has a herpetarium, bear grottoes, a Komodo dragon exhibit, and more.

Must-see animals include Galápagos tortoises, flamingos, saltwater crocodiles, camels, giraffes, chimpanzees, white rhinos, and boa constrictors. An aquatic center is also available, with a stingray touch tank and exhibits with sharks, seahorses, octopus, and more.

While the zoo has numerous bird species as well, visitors delight in learning that many of the birds seen at the zoo are not part of the collection, but come here to find refuge and nest. Situated in the hill country of North Texas just south of Fort Worth, Fossil Rim Wildlife Center (accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums) fights to conserve species in peril, while giving visitors the chance to learn about a host of animals and view them in spacious habitats.

At Wolf Canyon, guests can hop out of the car to see gray wolves and American black bears or walk through the half-acre Eagle Aviary. Visitors to Arizona, situated on 160 acres of land near the town of Williams, dive through more than three miles of Ponderosa pine forest on a safari to see North American animals in naturalistic habitats.

After the driving portion of the park, guests can head on foot through Fort Arizona, where winding walkways lead past smaller animals on exhibit. At the AZA-accredited San Diego Zoo Safari Park, visitor can feed a giraffe, observe rhinos with their young, watch an elephant herd splash through a pond or see lions basking in the sun.

A bit of Africa in the heart of California’s wine country, AZA-accredited Safari West welcomes guests to the “Sonoma Serengeti,” where a 3-hour riding and walking adventure takes them through the 400-acre preserve. Giraffes, zebras, onyx, gazelle, antelopes, buffalo, wildebeest and many other species number among the 1,000 animals that call the park home.

Although they tend to be very aggressive toward other animals, Gravy’s zebras are beneficial to other wild grazers because they clear off the tops of coarse grasses that are difficult for other herbivores to digest. At Fossil Rim, Gravy’s live in a private pasture, but can potentially be visited on an Adventure Tour.

In addition to being a drive through safari in Texas, they are also the biggest cheetah breeding facility in the world. Many endangered species, such as the scimitar-horned onyx, have also been reintroduced to the wild thanks to the efforts of Fossil Rim Wildlife Center.
