Visitors can find inspiration and tranquility during any season of the year with a stroll through the Asian Garden. The Mellichamp Terrace, the UNC Botanical Gardens' newest addition, features a meadow accompanied by landscaping and woodwork.

A visit to the meadow while its in bloom offers visitors a chance to experience the new addition at its pique. The plants on display, however, reach their peak bloom at different times of the year, resulting in a unique experience with each season.

Visitors will find orchids in full bloom in the McMillan Greenhouse from January to February. Among the winter plants are evergreens, Japanese flowering Apricot, Witch Hazels, and ornamental barks.

The Van Landing ham Glen begins to be filled with blooming ephemeral wildflowers, including blood root, Hepatic, and trout lily. The spring wildflowers continue from early to mid-April in the Glen with anemones, trillium, jack-in-the-pulpits, may apples, columbine, woodland phlox, foam flowers, and emerging ferns.

Dogwoods, azaleas, Japanese maple foliage, redbuds, silver bell, perennials, straw, spring bulbs, and viburnums help transform the Hardwood Garden into a green paradise throughout April. Visitors can find shade in the woodland Van Landing ham Glen, which gives guest a taste of the mountains in the Piedmont around this time.

Savanna camellias can also be found in full bloom during the crisp, colorful fall season. The University of North Carolina Charlotte Botanical Gardens offers a variety of educational programs.

Cattle, horses, sheep and goats, deer, elk, giraffes, rhinos, pigs, camels, llamas, kangaroos, birds, quail, pheasants, ducks, swans, porcupines, and tortoises all inhabit the ranch.

The museum features an aquarium filled with aquatic species found in NorthCarolina's Outer Banks area, and an open ocean pool where a few species are available for touching. The plantation features a burro, a Devon cattle, guinea hogs, sheep, chickens, geese, and many horses that are also available for riding at the Latte Plantation Equestrian Center.

Tiger World About 50 miles northeast of Charlotte, Tiger World is a nonprofit animal conservation and educational center dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and preservation of exotic animals.
