Listed alphabetically, the following 10 zoos were selected from the west coast region of the USA and include Washington State, Oregon and California, as well as Alaska and Hawaii. The zoo is also home to exotic cold weather creatures including Tibetan yaks, snow leopards, Amur tigers and double-humped Bactrian camels.
The African Savannah habitat includes chimpanzees, giraffes, zebras, rhinoceroses, lizards and a walk-through aviary. The Tropical Forest habitat features monkeys, tigers, elephants, Komodo dragons and colorful birds.
The Pacific Islands' habitat has native birds and reptiles including the Galápagos tortoise and Eclectic Parrots. Situated on 133 lush sprawling acres in Griffith Park, the Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens is home to over 1,100 birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and more than 800 species of plants.
The fantastic exhibits include a gorilla reserve, walk-through tropical aviary, elephant habitat, rainforest, reptile house, and a host of animals native to Australia, Africa, Eurasia, and North and South America. Its main attraction is the African Savannah where elephants and other animals roam a six-acre habitat with grassy hills, open plains, pool and trees.
The zoo’s Tropical Rain Forest is a lush and inviting habitat with tigers, primates, colorful birds, reptiles and more. A variety of programs including live animal presentations and feedings make a trip here unforgettable.
The San Diego Zoo has many rare and endangered animals and features exhibits with exquisitely reproduced natural habitats that include gorillas, tigers, leopards, jaguars, polar bears, camels, koalas, giant pandas and much more. Tours, animal interactions, presentations and programs offer fascinating and educational experiences, while gondola rides on Safari give guests an unforgettable view of the zoo and surrounding San Diego areas.
Visitors can embark on a variety of safaris where they will be treated to memorable wildlife encounters from scenic and relaxing cart and tram tours with knowledgeable guides, to exciting zip lines with panoramic views, to caravans, sleepovers in tents, and more. Kids will enjoy exploring the park’s jungle gym playground, Discovery Station with fun and educational activities, interactive water play area, Petting Kraal with goats, colorful lorises, and exotic merry-go-round with its many rare and wild animals for a delightful ride.
This African-themed park offers guests a beautifully recreated glimpse of several African regions including a Gorilla Habitat, Lion Camp and Elephant Overlook. Its 100-acre location by the Pacific Ocean offers families fabulous exhibits, a scenic nature trail, shows and programs, miniature steam train, carousel, bird sanctuary, playground and recreational area.
It also boasts a Family Farm with petting area, hatchery, and programs like animal care and feedings. The Fisher-Price Little Learners’ Log Cabin provides young children and toddlers with dynamic learning opportunities including music, crafts, games and animal encounters as well.
From tropical rain forests, to the African Savannah, to the Pacific Northwest, the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, Washington houses about 1,100 animals in its award-winning naturalistic habitat exhibits. Watch jaguars in a lush tropical forest; see lions, hippos and zebras in the grassland plains; hand feed tropical birds as you walk through the Billabong Station where over 150 colorful birds fly free; listen to Madagascar hissing cockroaches and katydids, or observe desert millipedes and scorpions in Bug World.
Children will love the Family Farm (seasonal), with its petting area that includes goats, rabbits and sheep, and the nature-themed Zoomazium where they can have fun expending energy in a playground, enjoy stories, arts and crafts, and live animals. Children of all ages are welcome to brush the adorable pygmy goats in the Animal Care Yard or touch the Southern and Atlantic Stingrays at Stingray Bay, while adventurous animal lovers can feed giraffes at the Giraffe Overlook or hold a cup of nectar for the Rainbow Lorises at the Australian Adventure area.
It’s here that you can see an array of exotic animals, from manatees to tigers, monkeys, and rhinos to African elephants, koalas, and orangutans. Perfect for young visitors, there is a splash pad to cool off in, an area to feed playful goats, and plenty of engaging educational shows that will keep them entertained.
For a unique birds-eye view of the park, visitors can delight in a ride on the monorail, or if it’s a hot summer day, you can cool off in the splash zone. Offering some of the unique experiences you can have at a zoo, you can kayak through Africa or get a birds-eye view of wild animals by zip lining through South America.
Kids will delight in the memorable experiences to be had here, from colorful Tories resting on their arms to touching a baby gator, stroking a rhino and feeding a giraffe. The park’s shaded boardwalks are surrounding by lush foliage and wetlands, while a 20,000-gallon aquarium offers a peek at the diverse underwater marine life and a touch tank play area for kids.
Domestic animals can be found at the Barnyard Buddies Children’s Zoo, while those who are fascinated by fierce creatures can see the Southeast’s largest collection of venomous snakes and non-venomous reptiles in the Herpetarium. Make sure to take a look at the fossa, an animal that is closely related to the mongoose and civet and is the largest native predator on the island of Madagascar.
The walkthrough portion is called Safari World, where kids of all ages will delight in the colorful displays of birds and fish. Take home souvenirs at the Lion’s Den Gift Shop or rent a paddle boat to float along Lake Shanna lee, while the kids will want to explore the Safari Splash Spray ground with water features and slides.
Lively animal shows and multimedia exhibits keep the entire family entertained, while a boat cruise sails past the primate island where you’re given a chance to see monkeys and lemurs. Make sure to see the Black Bear Hammock exhibit, catch a captivating “Snakes Live” show or plan a visit to the 19-foot reticulated python.
The kids will love the Safari Line Train, where you can ride past hippos, gorillas and antelope roaming free on the 30-acre preserve while you relax on a classic CP Huntington style locomotive. Visit the free flight aviary to see hundreds of colorful parakeets flying around as they perch on your hand, or take a walk along the elevated boardwalk for a bird’s eye view of the roaming herds of deer, zebra, and rhinos.
See the one-eyed Screech Owl, watch ring-tailed lemurs at play, hold an alligator, or take a stroll along the winding jungle trails that wrap along the tropical landscaping and gardens. Darling Downs Zoo is Queensland's major regional zoo and is situated in a tranquil rural setting on Queensland's beautiful eastern Darling Downs ... about midway between Toowoomba and Warwick.
The zoo is family owned by Steve and Stephanie Robinson who have devoted their lives to the care of all creatures great and small. The zoo is divided into four separate geographical areas and features animals from Africa, South America, South-east Asia as well as Australia.
Our emphasis is on housing and displaying animals in appropriate social groupings as well as in naturalistically themed habitats. Florida's manatees are found in shallow, slow-moving rivers, bays, estuaries and coastal water ecosystems of the southeastern United States.
But there are some things to consider and rules to follow to make this an enjoyable experience for both you AND the manatee! In the winter when the weather is cooler, generally November through March, you might be able to see manatees in the wild, clustered around warm water sources.

A few manatees may range as far north as Massachusetts and as far west as Texas during the summer months, but these sightings are rare. Summer sightings in Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina are relatively common.
