We've rounded up a few of our favorite pours of whites and reds this past 2020, worth nabbing this year for all manner of special occasions and, hopefully, a more celebratory 2021. The aromas and flavors are broad and seemingly endless alongside notes of plum, black cherry, a bit of raspberry and toasty oak.

The 2003 Bellissima Ross established the potential of Lake Chelan viticulture when it won Best of Class, Double Gold and Best Bordeaux blend in the prestigious San Francisco Chronic Wine Competition. From a stylistic standpoint, Sarah wines hailing from their estate vineyard possess your classic Rhone Valley presentation.

Deep concentrated flavors and aromas of purple and red plums, ripe black cherries and a slight bramble note couple with bright acidity and moderate tannins. This lovely easy drinking wine is a favorite of winemaker Ray Candide using exclusively native yeast for this 2018 edition.

Rather than simply accepting the black and red fruit flavors generated using a single introduced yeast strain, the Tillman team gambled and were rewarded with lovely floral notes interwoven with the blackberry, purple plum and black licorice notes. Typically, in the same class as Cabernet Franc, Male is usually utilized as a blending wine in Europe and North America.

While they do use a small portion of each vintage to blend with other reds in their portfolio, the strength of Tillman Cellars’ Male wine is legendary. In keeping with the mantra, “Don’t try and force the issue, go with your strengths,” the future finds Tillman Cellars producing more Male.

Long Shadows offers a collection of wines from participating winters across the globe, highlighting the best grapes from popular vines around the world. The wines pay tribute to the Columbia Valley, so much so that it earned Long Shadows fourth place in the 2020 USA Today 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Tasting Room.

Expressive aromatics of white flowers, ripe pear and peach are laced with a delightful hint of wet stone generality. A delicious natural acidity and trace of residual sugar provide a balanced, vibrant mouth feel and long, satisfying finish.

Deep fruit aromatics of blackcurrant, blueberry and pomegranate interplay with added notes of cola, cocoa and coffee bean complement this Cab SUV. On the palate, elegant tannins and mouthwatering acidity harmonize in a beautiful tension as vibrant flavors of blueberry cobbler, crème de cassis and raspberry dance along the extended finish.

Co-founder Rick Small planted the first of forty-one acres of the Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard in 1976 on his family’s dryland wheat ranch, which now boasts longtime Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Avignon Blanc and Chardonnay as well as several experimental Italian and Rhone varieties. Inspired by the Grand CPU’s of Burgundy, chardonnay was the first wine founder Rick Small made as a home winemaker.

It was also the first varietal planted on the Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard in 1977 which now could easily qualify as “old vines” at over 40 years of age. The Woodward Canyon “Artist Series” began in 1992 with the intent to showcase the finest cabernet sauvignon in Washington State and has since become our flagship wine.

The vineyards used in the “Artist Series” are among the oldest and most highly regarded in the state, as typical vine age is around 25 years old. In the mouth, the wine is rich and elegant, showing ripe fruit, nice balance, and proportion, with herbs and tobacco.

The first vintages of Long Haul and Dead Horse were produced crushed and pressed in garages of friends and family, barrels aged in warehouses in the Seattle area, and finally settling in Joinville in 2003. More than a decade later, Mark Ryan Winery has grown in size, earned acclaim from wine lovers and critics alike, and garnered respect from the state's elite producers.

2018 Dead Horse offers lush, dark fruit on the nose mingled with eucalyptus, red currant and plum. The palate presents dense flavors of blackberry, plum, dark chocolate and hints of leather and slate with baking spices.

Full-bodied with structured tannins, it balances integrated acidity with a lengthy finish and earned up to 96 points in acclaim. Its rich mid-palate is beautifully framed and focused with flavors of spiced pear, ripe honeydew, wet stone and a mineral finish.
