At night, I stayed awake in the hut where we were staying to find out what happened next by the light of a small lamp, long after everyone else had gone to sleep and trying my best not to disturb anyone.” Read more... “One of the key questions that Tolstoy asks in the appendix is the central question of War and Peace : how can we explain the fact that, on orders, millions of people go out and kill one another, when they know that killing another human being is morally wrong?” Read more... “The reason I chose War and Peace is that it is the greatest novel of all time and I still think it is even after reading it five times…. As a novelist, when you begin to write in this era it is like the elephant in the room, especially if you love it as much as I do. It’s a demotic theory of history, though not necessarily a socialist view.” Read more... “One doesn’t have to invent the bicycle, there is one: it’s War and Peace.

It’s about how Russia won the Napoleonic wars, and moved into the first row of nations who dealt with European history. I'm thinking about finally getting around to reading Tolstoy's War and Peace, and I'm trying to decide which edition to buy.

I want the best translation possible (though best is highly subjective in these matters), but, superficial as I am, I also want a well-designed book (since I'm going to be spending at least a month with it). Clean, crisp type is a must, and a hardcover edition is preferable (though quality of the translation takes precedence over aesthetics in the end). So far I'm looking at the Modern Library edition, translated by Constance Garrett (a single hardcover volume), and the Every man's Library edition, translated by Aylmer Maude and Louise Maude (three hardcover volumes in a slipcase).

First Editions, First Printings with all the title-pages dated 1886 and with the proper Gottsberger imprint on versos. A magnificent copy bound in the ORIGINAL publisher's brown cloth.

The bindings are tight with NO cocking or leaning and the boards are crisp. Overall, a spectacular set of this First edition in English housed in a custom clam shell slipcase for preservation.

Rare complete set in Russian of the works of Leo Tolstoy, Prince Johan's copy. Octavo, 14 volumes, twelve portrait frontispieces and six plates, bound in three quarters morocco with each binding signed by Nikolai Trukhachev, principal binder for the Konstantinovich family from 1901 to 1915, gilt titles to the spine, raised bands, marbled endpapers.

Prince Johan, was the eldest son of Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich of Russia by his wife, Elizabeth Mavrikievna, née Princess Elisabeth of Saxe-Altenburg. He was described by contemporaries as a gentle, religious person, nicknamed “Ioannis” by his relatives.

He was born as a Grand Duke of Russia with the style Imperial Highness, but at the age of 9 days, an KAZ of his cousin Emperor Alexander III of Russia stripped him of that title, as the KAZ amended the House Law by limiting the grand-ducal title to grandsons of a reigning emperor. As a result, he received the title Prince of the Imperial Blood (Prince of Russia) with the style Highness.

He married Princess Helen of Serbia on 2 September 1911, and Helen took the name Princess Elena Petronas of Russia. They had a son, Prince Vsevolod Ivanovich (20 January 1914 – 18 June 1973), and a daughter, Princess Ekaterina Ivanna (12 July 1915 – 13 March 2007), who was the last member of the Imperial Family to be born before the fall of the dynasty, and was ultimately to become the last surviving uncontested dynasty of the Imperial House of Russia.

Born to an aristocratic Russian family in 1828, Leo Tolstoy is best known for the novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, often cited as pinnacles of realist fiction. He first achieved literary acclaim in his twenties with his semi-autobiographical trilogy, Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth (1852-1856), and Sevastopol Sketches, based upon his experiences in the Crimean War.

Each individual is immersed in experiences and conversations elucidating Tolstoy's themes of self-sacrifice and self-indulgence, anguish and ecstasy, diplomacy and deception, and religion and perdition. The complexities of character and plot are sometimes enigmatic, and names are often exhausting to recollect, but the genius of this book is everlasting.

Similarly, De Vogue, the “greatest French authority on Russian literature. Remarks that:. It is a faithful picture of life: the experience of a traveler thrown among a society new to him--constraint and boredom at first, then curiosity and at last a firm attachment.

War and Peace can be said to stand “at the crucial point where the modern novel begins.” Tolstoy s immediate predecessors in the development of the modern novel were the great French analytical novelists of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Rousseau and Stendhal, who influenced Tolstoy greatly.

Very loosely, the point of view method did not simply relate words and actions of characters, as in the dramatic method, but provided psychological insight as to why characters thought and acted the way they did. “Tolstoy in War and Peace transcends the limit of the novel and does what had previously been done by the epic.

Thus War and Peace has to be put in a group not with Madame Bovary, Vanity Fair, or the Mill on the Floss, but with the Iliad, in the sense that when the novel is finished nothing is finished--the stream of life flows on, and with the appearance of Prince Andrew s son the novel ends on the beginning of a new life.” Tolstoy s original intention was to recount the Decembers movement which culminated in the revolt of 1825 and was the predecessor to the “back to the people” movement of the seventies and the revolutionary movements that culminated in the communist overthrow of tsarist power in 1917.

However, when Tolstoy began to investigate the Decembers conspiracy, he began to delve deeper into the historical events preceding it. Although Tolstoy was interested in the role that the Masons played in opposing tsarist power, these parts were probably made ambiguous by the censors of the time.

Overall a Very Good, untouched set housed in a custom case. *** The books were released in both brown cloth and wrappers.

These sets aren't terribly rare, but ours offers an interesting wrinkle in that it's an export issue. Gottsberger set aside an unknown number of books for release in Europe with title pages bearing the imprint of their publishing partners in London, Paris, and Leipzig containing European market aimed advertisements at the rear far less common than the ubiquitous domestic American market sets.
