Whether heading off to college at Baylor University, shopping at Chip and Joanna Gaines’s Magnolia Market, or just passing through, these 13 restaurants are essential Waco dining destinations. On the sweet side, find treats like buttermilk pie, bread pudding, and classic chocolate chip cookies.

This small Korean eatery ain’t fancy, but where else in Waco can you find solid Bulgari, Kali, funky kimchi, and a great double cheeseburger in the same place? This quirky food truck serves up a small menu of Cambodian favorites, like yellow chicken curry, grilled pork sandwiches, and ridiculously crispy egg rolls.

The bread at this no-frills spot is baked in-house, then piled high with pastrami, salami, corned beef, or deli meats. Owned by Fixer Upper’s Chip and Joanna Gaines, this sweet little bakery serves up pastries that are perfect for eating whilst walking around Magnolia Market.

Open for brunch, lunch, and dinner, Milo All Day boasts a bright, locally influenced menu with tons of culinary creativity. This cozy Vietnamese spot serves up for, vermicelli bowls, and other favorites, but the real star of the menu is the namesake clay pot dishes.

Meats like bark-crusted brisket, smoked turkey, and chipotle-cheddar sausage are sold by the pound, and a slew of stellar sides (think cheesy grits and elote-style corn topped with Hot Cheetos) are worthy of setting aside a little stomach space. If the infamous Gut PAK, a massive pile of smoked meat, Frito, cheese, beans, pickles, and barbecue sauce, is a little too overwhelming, a simple brisket sandwich will totally hit the spot.

A popular haunt for Baylor students, George’s serves up giant, 18-ounce margaritas (or beers) alongside Southern comfort food. Dig into burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, and an equally large brownie sundae served in one of its “Big O” glasses.

The world absolutely needed a restaurant devoted to macaroni and cheese, and Franklin Avenue Mac House rises to the challenge with aplomb. This old-school spot serves up a perfectly greasy burger, tots, and fries, and the super-thick milkshakes are substantial enough to almost qualify as a meal.

When it’s time to sit down, dig into fluffy buttermilk pancakes or avocado toast on bread from Waco’s own Heritage Bakery. On the sweet side, find treats like buttermilk pie, bread pudding, and classic chocolate chip cookies.

Pay a visit to Taquería El Cicero, an unassuming little family-owned restaurant that has fantastic breakfast burritos, Midas, tacos, and more. Their legendary So burrito is stuffed with beans, rice, and chicken, and smothered in sour cream and salsa Verde; it’s a must-try.

Sure, the Gut Pack from Vivek's isn’t exactly the most appetizing-sounding dish in the world, but it’s an undeniable part of Waco’s barbecue identity. The culinary team at Basis uses only the freshest ingredients to make their famous gourmet pizzas, which are available by the slice or as whole pies, and are made from scratch as soon as you order them.

Over the last 40 years, Kick has gone from a no-name diner to a nationally known restaurant, beloved for its unique blend of American and Korean fare. It’s a heaping double cheeseburger served with deep-fried shoestrings of carrots, onions, potatoes, and parsley, all dipped in tempura batter.

The hosts of the HGTV show “Fixer Upper” are Waco royalty at this point and there are few corners left in the city untouched by the pair. Magnolia Table is their signature restaurant, and you don’t have to have seen “Fixer Upper”to be able to appreciate the food here, which is mostly classic Southern fare with a locally-sourced twist (many of the veggies come straight from Jo’s garden).

Menu mainstays like Jo’s Buttermilk Biscuits and the Gaines Brothers Burger are offered in addition to seasonal favorites. Since opening their doors in 1946, Tony Maria’s has been under the same family’s ownership, and today, it’s a veritable Waco institution (and a little of a hometown secret, thanks to its nondescript location off I-35).
