Happily, Cornwall in the autumn can mean a perfectly benign climate for a seaside holiday with a toddler. Will Ashworth has transformed his parents’ bucket and spade hotel on the North Cornish coast, which they bought in the Sixties and kept open for just six months of the year, into a modern self- styled “ski resort on the beach” which is open all year round with around 80 per cent occupancy.

Ashworth used the same design team who collaborated on Shore ditch House and the Cowshed Spa to transform this wing of the hotel. The hotel is relaxing and unpretentious and although the sporting vibe is strong among the guests, I felt very at home just lounging around.

Weather forecasts and wind speeds are chalked up each morning on a blackboard in the foyer; guests pad in and out of the hotel along the broad walk which connects the hotel to the beach via poolside terraces and outdoor sauna. The hotel is adult-focused yet child- friendly and has a great kids’ drop-in zone where you can dump three- to seven-year-olds while you go off for a massage, swim or drink.

Our bedroom had fabulous sea views, but the downside was a stand-alone bath at the foot of the bed (very romantic in theory but hell with a toddler). The 20 family suites with shared kitchens are more practical, but you don’t get the sea views.

The other main draw of the hotel is its proximity to Jamie Oliver’s restaurant Fifteen, a short walk away. First up was a fried courgette flower, followed by tortellini of slow-cooked Gram pound duck with crunchy crispy sage.

The hotel’s own dining room, Beach Hut and Living Space restaurant are competitively priced (Cornish lobster and chips for £19.95). Thunder cat races take place daily and our visit coincided with Verve Liquor’s annual polo tournament on the beach.

The sheer beauty of the county, sometimes as unexpected as a dilapidated mill chimney stabbing up through a leaden sky, has inspired generations of painters: from John Atkinson Grimshaw’s moonscapes to the Victorian artists of the States Group to David Hockney’s Yorkshire Wolds.

It was first built in the late 17th century, and has been much altered over the years, especially when wealthy mill owner Samuel Cunliffe-Lister bought the estate in 1888, much enlarging it and creating its present Victorian feel. The view in Rookie through dual-aspect windows is one of the best in the UK: one side is of the ever-changing sea; the other is of pretty Closely harbor and north Devon’s majestic coastline unraveling into the distance. Its picturesque patchwork of lakes, valleys, woodlands and fells make it one of the best places in Britain to get out and experience the great outdoors, whether it’s on a leisurely bike ride down country lanes or a day-long hike across the hills.

The Lake District also has numerous artistic and literary connections, most famously William Wordsworth, who was born in Cockermouth in 1770 and drew much of his poetic inspiration from the surrounding landscape. And while the weather is notoriously unpredictable (locals will tell you it’s not unusual to experience all four seasons in a single day), showers and racing clouds only emphasize the grandeur of the magnificent scenery.
