It's a genuine display of Christmas spirit that also doubles as a very persuasive commercial of sorts for the business. Of Santa's workshop is there each year, along with carriage rides, games, inflatables for the kids, music, prizes and photos with the jolly old elf.
The Rhodes family of Cedar Park are local celebrities of a kind. A generous family in offering their light show for the masses, they also walk the walk in their ordinary lives collecting perishable food items for the local food bank.
There are more 25,000 red, white and blue LED lights featured in a display that is both holidayesque and patriotic. As centerpiece is an 18-foot Christmas tree with some 2,000 additional LED rotating in a seemingly infinite pattern of colors, pictures, words and designs synchronized to music.
This featured home in Shady Oaks is known far and wide for its spectacular display begun in 2011. I drove around Waco with my wife and kids yesterday evening to scope out some of the best light displays in town, and thanks to the help of Waveform reader Ryan McGrath, we found some really great ones.
Here is my list of our 7 favorite light displays in or near Waco with links to their locations on Google Maps. Drive by and check it out after you get your picture taken with Santa a Lake Air Mall and do some shopping at Goldstein-Migel.
Each house is beautifully lit and includes a reindeer-shaped sign that says “Merry Christmas from the _________.” Wooded Crest Drive in Wood way has established a reputation as a destination for Christmas lighting enthusiasts in Waco in years past.
There are a few houses on the street that are not participating this year, so it's not quite as impressive as it has been, but it still remains one of our favorites. Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area has its annual Nature in Lights display, and it's a must-see attraction.
You drive through the park for about 2 miles of displays, and halfway through there is an indoor area with little shops, food and even Santa. This house is at the corner of Proctor Ave. and 28th St., right across from the parking lot of the old Hillcrest Hospital.
The lights go from the front yard around to the side along 28th St. Do yourself a favor and park your car, so you can get out and take a look at this one up close. Hats off to all the people who put in the extra time and money to make Christmas that much more special for their friends and neighbors.
I, for one, am too lazy to do much more than wrap a few strands of lights around the tree trunks in my front yard, so I really appreciate those of you who work hard to put on a fun and festive display. Though it was once known as “an unlikely tourist town,” Waco, Texas, has quickly become a booming tourism destination thanks to HGTV's Fixer Upper stars Chip and Joanna Gaines.
According to the Magnolia Stay page, both rentals are places for guests to rest, unplug, and enjoy time together. To book either one of the vacation homes, guests must make their reservations online with a minimum 2-night stay, which can begin on Mondays, Wednesdays, or Fridays.
Magnolia House, however, is a “unique retreat...designed in Joanna's classic style,” which is located about 20 minutes outside of Waco and sleeps eight people comfortably.
