The chemical was found present in all 29 fluid samples submitted to the CDC for testing, and has been identified as a once-popular additive in black market THC cartridges. In the early months of the vaping crisis, the weed-related part of the story flew under the radar, except on cannabis-specific sites like Leafy.

Many marijuana advocacy organizations have warned consumers not to buy THC vape products from unlicensed retailers. Andrew Hathaway, an associate professor of sociology at the University of Guelph in Canada, says it’s reasonable for people (i.e., papers) to be skeptical about the amount of attention being paid to VAPID.

Stephen Bright, a senior lecturer on addiction at Edith Conan University in Australia who specializes in harm reduction, worries that reactive vaping legislation might have unintended consequences. “When there’s a moral panic, governments need to be seen as responding in some way because people are concerned, and when they react very quickly, often what they’re doing isn’t evidence-based, and it can have unintended negative effects,” he says.

He likens the outright ban like those increasingly seen in the U.S. as using “a sledgehammer on a nail.” A more effective approach is to apply stringent regulations, says Bright. Vaping THC oil has become a popular alternative to smoking weed in recent years, largely due to the product’s convenience, lack of odor, and potency.

Erick Kaufman is a cannabis doctor working in Oklahoma, where legal medical marijuana is less than a year old. Kaufman worries that lax regulation will allow sellers to prioritize profit over safety, particular in vaping products.

To be clear, Kaufman’s concern is not for the THC itself, but what it’s mixed with: Vitamin E acetate, in particular, but other possible diluting agents and pesticides as well. “There’s a slew of other solvents and other things we do look at, but this one wasn’t on the list, which is probably why people were using it,” says CEO Myron Ronny.

And while Ronny says that “most” legal dispensaries in California don’t use cutting or thickening agents in their THC cartridges, he can’t guarantee none do. “I’ve got major concerns about the health and safety of the public using CBD products because there are no regulations,” says Ronny.

In the best-case scenario, the CBD advertised in a product won’t do much of anything, but in the worst cases, Ronny worries there’s significant opportunity to introduce undisclosed chemical agents, in part because the claims made around its effects are so nebulous. “When you eat something, it’s going through that slower metabolism, and that’s why it takes 60–120 minutes to kick in, but you’re not getting that direct exposure to your lungs.” While Dr. Rad acknowledges that it can be hard for patients to wait (and hard to predict how much to take), the effects are longer-lasting, and she likes to avoid the risk to patients’ lungs.

For those who prefer the immediacy of smoking, but still want to spare their lungs as much as possible, Kaufman recommends a dry herb vaporizer, like the Aegis or similar. These devices operate like little ovens, allowing users to avoid combustion and the resulting smoke.

“The actual cannabis plant has 100 different active ingredients that work together in what we call the entourage effect, and when somebody isolates THC and sells it to you, you’re missing out on a lot of the really helpful compounds that come from the flower,” says Kaufman. It was elegant and silver, with a rechargeable battery that screwed into a transparent cartridge filled with amber-colored marijuana concentrate.

Suddenly, I could sneak a few hits in the bathroom during a concert or comedy show, or quietly get high in the back of a bar while the rest of my friends downed shots. It was almost impossible to find a working phone number or email address for any of the nascent companies making cannabis oil in California, so I went to weed festivals like Chalice and High Times cups to try to talk to the people who made and sold this stuff for a living.

While stoners waited in line for free dabs, I would make my way to the back of a booth and try to figure out who was in charge. I learned that the majority of the vape pens on the market contained a type of concentrate known as butane hash oil (BHO), though stores were selling it under a variety of names.

For cannabis oil companies, this was one of the easiest problems to fix: most residual butane can be removed in a vacuum oven, and a lot of legal states now limit the parts per million of butane that can remain in cannabis oil. This eliminated the second potential safety issue: the chemicals that get put into lighter fluid to help it flow through pumps.

At this point, there’s only anecdotal evidence about what these lung problems might look like, and how bad the consequences could be, but a lot of cannabis extraction companies now remove the cuticle waxes from their oil in a process called winterization. You can’t just look for vape pens with thinner oil, because if it’s not very viscous, there’s a good chance it’s been cut with some kind of additive or synthetic flavoring.

A recent study from chemists at Portland State University found that the hotter that hash oil gets, the more carcinogens will be released. The chemicals that farmers use on pot to eliminate mites and mold and mildew, and those that make their buds denser, are basically invisible but are known to kill brain cells and cause cancer.

Even in Oregon, which has the strictest set of pesticide regulations in the nation, a recent investigation showed that unclean products are slipping through the cracks and making it to dispensary shelves. I first published details about the safety issues with hash oil over two years ago, and I still get asked by strangers whether I myself use the stuff.

Since I personally know a lot of farmers and vape pen manufacturers, this didn’t feel like it was going to be hard. In a few years, we might have full legalization, input from federal agencies like the FDA and the EPA, and fully functioning regulatory systems that ensure safe vaping for all.

Hello usually do not do this, but I thought I would follow through with something I mentioned when I first made this Zen pen. Back then I was a little reserved about this kit in that I felt the cap maybe too loose and be a problem.

Being able to easily snap on the back side is a plus and really does not throw off the balance. The body is great for displaying some bigger blanks that need to be stretched out some.

I have shown my setup for pens like this in the segmenting forum particularly under the topic “MY Jig. I have also wanted to try this idea with mother-of-pearl I harvest from local clams and ebony left over from my violin making days.

The disclaimer covered credit cards and the like but didn't address health concerns bc I didn't think of them. I have emailed CS USA just now about both the credit card and possible health risks out of curiosity and sent them the link to the thread.

I like the Zen in concept, and they sell great, however from a purely personal perspective I find them uncomfortable to write with as the step down to the metal section rests right on my fingers where I grip to write. I can alleviate this by holding higher up on the body, but I don't find that terribly comfortable either. However, I haven't had a customer come back to me with a complaint yet.

Just inform them of the rare earth magnet, and its possible effects on mag strips like credit cards and such. Well a quick and very informative response from Craft Supplies. Magnet spec info attached.

I was able to find that as long as the magnet of the pen is more than 1 inch away from the pacemaker itself then it will not affect the pacemaker. So as long as you are an inch away from the pacemaker itself you should be ok according to my findings.

As to the credit card strips the same sources say that any size magnet sitting close to it for a long time will wipe the strip however Even the largest magnet needs time to make it work. So short term exposure shouldn’t be a problem, but I might not carry the 2 items in the same pocket.

I have attached the picture of the screen from where Entered the information to get the info. I do think the magnetic disclosure should be made and perhaps a comment on the credit cards is warranted but if you have a health condition, are allergic to nuts, have a food allergy etc I do think you have to be your own advocate in your everyday life.

I'm sure people with a medical condition will know if it's affected by magnetic fields and make their own decision. I would also think that anyone who has a credit card should know that it has a magnetic strip, but I'd tell folks they might not want to keep it in the same pocket.

I still will pass the warning on, and I bet there is always someone out there that would push the envelope.

The cap became intriguing to me in that I was thinking of incorporating that style in some pen designs. I thought about a snap cap, but a small magnet would be a lot easier and wear tougher I think.

I've made a couple of Vertex fountain pens and a Magnetic Graduate fountain, and LOVE the magnetic caps. I don't carry any of them in my pocket, though, and don't have a pacemaker, so didn't even think about possible problems.

I use pick guard material, I use wood fillers and in this particular pen I used plastic strips which I cut from sheets. I don't carry any of them in my pocket, though, and don't have a pacemaker, so didn't even think about possible problems.

I use pick guard material, I use wood fillers and in this particular pen I used plastic strips which I cut from sheets. Thanks, I just found some .100” thick styrene on eBay that might do the trick.

I can alleviate this by holding higher up on the body, but I don't find that terribly comfortable either. For me too, I find that sharp step uncomfortable. For a comfy to write with Zen, I use the one that they make that is identical, except instead of the magnetic cap, it has the screw-on threads in the cap. So where your index finger sits, it's nice and smooth there. More of a traditional roller ball end, but with the nice long body to show off nice blanks, or for me, I like it for stamp pens because there is no clip in the way. But then it's hard to remember to not yank on the cap since it's not magnetic...

That pen has signed WAY too many credit card receipts :big grin: I guess I have big hands and do not hold the pen so close to the nib when writing.
