Are Xenons Worth It

Are the headlights any good on the SE or if you had your choice again would you spec Xenon ? I'm not fussed about the LED bling but having suffered the atrocious halogen lights on my Audi A6 for the last 4 years I am concerned I have one chance to get it right.

We drive about 15k miles a year and I commute pretty much in the dark from September to March on unlit minor roads so at that time of the year when we faff about with the clocks headlights suddenly go right to the top of the priority list. I know it's £1100 but that's not my overriding concern, if they're unquestionably better than I'll pay it but if there is not a lot in it then I'll keep the money in my pocket.

They cost at least two pages of the Brand up Accessories Catalog. But in my extensive driving over there I never felt the lights were not up to the task......

But in my extensive driving over there I never felt the lights were not up to the task...... Options get really crazy if you need to pay extra for decent lights.........

The roads I and my missus drive on are completely unlit, and have few cats eyes or white painted borders, so we need all the “help” we can get I'm ashamed to admit. I shall justify the cost of Xenon by explicitly and deliberately explaining to the missus that I will NOT be buying an iphone5.

You're right cars progress, and it can't be long before Xenon and (or) LEDs feature as a norm for lighting. I certainly don't think you should be ashamed, I feel similar when I am driving at night on poorly lit roads.

Looking at why you may have them, they give out a much wider spread of light, very handy on narrow roads. Options get really crazy if you need to pay extra for decent lights.........

I agree but seeing as my Audi was built quite a while ago I think for me at least the horse has bolted on this one. It's my own fault, nobody made me buy it, but ever since I've always tried to do part of a test drive in the dark.

Can they be retro fitted? Might be another option it VAN TEC or Jazzy Day can do a retro fit ashen the cost is deferred to after delivery of the Cali. Can they be retro fitted? I'm off to look at the Jazzy Day website, it's fast becoming as well viewed as the Brand brochure! Aha, there we go I thought that would be the case. I might add these onto my retrofit wish list in that case.

The downside to retro fit is expense, no point getting to a stage were you could have just got a factory order. Great for early morning driving or poor weather.

There are few features of a car that can inspire greater confidence at this time than a good set of headlights. Also referred to as High Intensity Discharge (or HID) headlights, they offer a crisp whitish-blue light that illuminates the road far ahead.

The xenon gas fills the chamber in which the contacts sit, and amplifies the brightness of the light, helping it to quickly reach the temperature necessary to emit an intense beam. The lack of a filament in HID slight means that they generally last far longer than traditional bulbs.

Many cheaper cars still make use of the typical halogen systems, with xenon headlights available on higher spec trim levels. The limited-run Audi R8 AMX was the first production car to be offered with laser headlights, just pipping the BMW i8 to the throne.

Laser headlights offer an even greater intensity of light with even better accuracy in preventing glare for oncoming traffic, and we expect them to become commonplace over the next five years or so. I would make Xenon headlights a serious consideration if I were ordering new.

I only ever order cars with them now, once you've had them it's difficult to go back and driving a vehicle without them makes you feel like you only have flickering candles on the front. Retrofit/Factory?? Well in some cases (RNS510) I would say retrofit but in this case the overall cost of the retrofit combined the work required makes it a factory order decision in my opinion.

Any chance you can look at the LED Cali pics thread and the link posted re the LED front window blinds. I'm not a fan of Xenon, I have had OEM ones on various cars.

I think they dazzle oncoming drivers very easily, even if well/correctly set up. Also, IMHO I think they can be too bright, and can affect your natural night vision (too bigger difference in brightness between lit & unlit areas).

Micky ; I used them on the Defender along with better light units. My single bike light running on one battery chucks out 1700 lumens for 3+ hours in s single charge.

It's difficult to know how to reply to many of your posts, I've come back to this one several times, editing the post each time, sarcasm, understanding, pity, humor, I've considered all themes for my reply and I am still flummoxed. Car lights are taking a while to catch up! It's difficult to know how to reply to many of your posts, I've come back to this one several times, editing the post each time, sarcasm, understanding, pity, humor, I've considered all themes for my reply and I am still flummoxed.

You don't need to reply, it's all subjective. Your xenon units look the dogs :censor and are worth it for the LED URLs alone.

James It's your Cali and your choices, you are happy so don't worry about everyone else's views. LED lighting is the future; lower power consumption, better performance, longer life, more durable in use in vehicles.

However, the technology is still developing, so it will be awhile before its in main stream use in vehicle headlights. Ducats have just started using it on their latest super bike, the Panicle, new out this year.

It's the first production motorcycle to have full led headlights. Again the technology is still developing and cost (plus other issues) are still potential barriers to its widespread application.

I hate them on Audi's, but think they are more acceptable on the Cali, dunno why :DOH Wrap them carefully and post them to me, not forgetting to remove and send the auto-leveling sensors at the same time.

These Cali's are very personal, a choice of the heart as much as one of the head. I never saw my Beach as a project, but I've added stuff which will help me whilst I own it and hopefully at resale, along the way I've tried to create a vehicle that captures something unique.

I've got a very basic vehicle really, I love the Xenon, going down a country road with a bit MOE confidence is fantastic. If I was ordering from the factory now, any car, yes, xenon, equally I am aware the future of light technology may lie elsewhere.
