Hospitalization rates have shown a slight improvement over recent weeks, but that's still above the goal: the state Department of health would like to have fewer than 10 percent of hospital beds occupied by coronavirus patients. In December, the Department of Health and Human Services began reporting hospital capacity data at the facility level, which several have used to determine the percentage of hospital beds occupied across the country.

The HHS data compiled by the University of Minnesota are calculated at the facility level and averaged for each county. Here's how the model developed by the university measures percentage of hospital and ICU beds occupied by coronavirus patients.

Percentage of hospital beds occupied by coronavirus patients = Seven day average of total adult and pediatric patients confirmed or suspected/Seven day average of staffed inpatient beds The colored icons on the map below indicate the hospital’s bed occupancy, but do not represent local hospitals surge plans to accommodate more patients.

The data, which comes for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, updates weekly. Include patients who have both suspected and laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 and laboratory-confirmed influenza in this field.

7 Day Sum of COVID-19 Admission Number of patients who were admitted to an inpatient bed, including ICU, NICU, PICK, newborn, and nursery, on the previous calendar day who had confirmed COVID-19 at the time of admission. 7 Day Sum of Emergency Department VisitHospital All hospital beds Total number of all staffed inpatient and outpatient beds in the hospital, including all overflow, observation, and active surge/expansion beds used for inpatients and for outpatients (includes all ICU, ED, and observation).

The trend is highlighted in new data added to the state’s Risk Assessment dashboard today. The updated hospitalization data show occupancy of ICU beds, where capacity is likely to be exceeded first.

Additionally, the dashboard has been updated to reflect data by region, as opposed to counties. “Accurate and relevant data is critical to allow all of us to work together to ensure no individual hospital or region is overwhelmed with COVID-19 cases” said Darcy Gaffe, senior vice president of safety and quality for the Washington State Hospital Association.

“As cases have risen again in Washington, it is important to use technology and data analytics, so we can have a better understanding of what resources and capacity we have at our hospitals to help those needing care. We are committed and honored to work with local and state officials to understand and stop the spread of COVID-19.” John Khan, VP, Chief Data Analytics Officer, and global lead for the AI for Health program, Microsoft.

Wash your hands frequently, get your flu shot and stay home if you’re sick. “Our hospitals are at record capacity, ” said Dr. Nathan Cliché, President of the Washington State Medical Association, on Tuesday.

If staff can’t keep up, hospitals reach out to recently retired physicians, and then the state would ask for help from the military. “There’s a terrible shortage of nurses in this country,” said Betsy Scott, RN and Vice President of SEU 1199.

Scott said her daughter and son-in-law were recently diagnosed with COVID-19, prompting nightmares about the potential of seeing those she loved carted off to the hospital where there’s a shortage of staffing, patients are being treated in hallways, and loved ones aren’t allowed to visit. The Everett Herald reports the number of people in hospitals across Snohomish County due to the virus has risen 400% in the past six weeks.

Sitters, Loft, Cliché, and Scott all pleaded with the public Tuesday to continue wearing masks both in public and around people who aren’t in your household, and to continue practicing social distancing measures. Inslee noted that Washington ranked #1 in The New York Times’ survey of people who are acting the most safe during the pandemic.

These are derived from reports with facility-level granularity across two main sources: (1) HHS Telegraphing, and (2) reporting provided directly to HHS Protect by state/territorial health departments on behalf of their healthcare facilities. The file will be updated daily and provides the latest values reported by each facility within the last four days.

In the past two weeks, the Northeast TRI County Health District, which covers Ferry, Stevens and Pend Oracle counties, reported more than 300 new COVID-19 cases, a record number accounting for a third of their total cases confirmed thus far in the pandemic. “What we’re finding is a lot of our cases that we’ve identified here, we can track back to people in Spokane,” said Ed Dazedly, public health administrator in Lincoln County.

“It’s just the nature of the beast, and it’s not pointing a finger at anybody, but the virus is going to do what it does; People move from rural to urban to buy goods and go to work.” The Spokesman-Review reports the small towns surrounding Spokane County have experienced a surge in cases in recent weeks, mirroring trends seen statewide.

The AHA may track different facility types in its annual reporting, which could cause a discrepancy in the total number of hospitals. In this model, patients receive short-term emergency or non-urgent medical care for an injury, illness, or other condition within an inpatient setting.

Hospital size Funding type Ownership Certifications Specialty Local population density This classification refers to small, rural hospitals that provide healthcare to underserved communities.

Because of this, they receive most of their payer reimbursements from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Total number of facilities represents only those hospitals listed as “active” in the Definitive Healthcare database as of August 12, 2021.

Information about “active” facility status is collected through proprietary Definitive Healthcare research and is updated on a continuous basis. This is due to the specific patient populations they serve and the specialized care they provide.

Religious non-medical health care institutions are the least common hospital type in the United States. This type of hospital provides 24-hour non-medical care to patients whose religious beliefs prevent them from accepting medical examinations, diagnoses, or treatments.

Because of these restrictions, religious non-medical health care institutions primarily help patients with daily activities, nutritional needs, and comfort. Industry consolidation is one of the driving forces behind the declining number of hospitals in the United States.

Rising medical and surgical supply costs can also have a significant impact on hospital finances. According to Definitive Healthcare data, the average U.S. hospital spent $11.9 million in annual medical and surgical supply costs in 2018.

If hospitals cannot reduce operating expenses in other ways, these supply costs may cause facilities to close. For other hospitals, closure is a result of significant staffing shortages or financial deficits.

Since the rapid onset of COVID-19 in early March 2020, many patients have also been delaying essential care. These delays are causing patient visits to decline at hospitals and other care sites across the United States.

This renewed preference for outpatient care could cause hospital visits to further decline. Definitive Healthcare CEO, Jason Kratz, addresses some of the trends that have emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic.
