It has been my experience that they are not fast enough and their quality of cut, especially on hills, has a lot that could be improved on. Save your money and buy a Boles form Lowes.

Some guys swear that a walker with a 52" or larger deck are like a goat on hills. I fell in love with the idea of this little mower the first time I saw it on the website. But I have yet to understand 'why' you can't use the 52" deck with it and why they didn't build it, so you could.

“The bitterness of poor quality lingers on long after the sweetness of cheap price is forgotten” I love my walker it's the best bagging machine on the market.

Don't do any hills yet so can't answer the question at the start of the thread. The belt drive decks, 52" & 62" are set up just enough different that this models construction will not make a good mate.

This is a lower price point tractor for side discharge and mulching only. A little bouncy on the sudden stops but otherwise seems to run faster than the Model T/25Hp I also have.

According to many mower manufacturers and landscape contractors, properly utilizing a mower’s safety features and following safe practices while mowing challenging areas, such as steep slopes, riverbanks, narrow spaces or rolling con-tours, can save a contractor not only valuable time going over terrain that was improperly cut, but a possible injury as well. Since there isn’t much control in the development or change in rolling hills and riverbanks, choosing the right mower with the right features to use on these areas can be the most important aspect of completing a job correctly.

“In a large area, contractors can give up productivity if they don’t use a riding mower,” he remarked. One of the biggest problems a mower can have when dealing with steep hills is a lack of traction, according to Walker.

When it comes to mowing on slopes, however, contractors shouldn’t be concerned about equipment they purchase as long as they follow the operator’s instructions, pointed out Peter Where, vice president of product management, Tex tron Turf care & Specialty Products, Racine, Wis. Before being sold, commercial machines are tested on a certain degree of slope, Where said. “Contractors should not buy equipment for a certain area until they test it on the property it’s going to be used on to ensure it will work,” Shea recommended.

“If a machine is used often on slopes, then an advantageous move from an end user would be to make sure that mower has a certified CROPS structure on it,” Where agreed. While there are certain benefits to CROPS as long as it is certified and used correctly, which means the operator needs to wear the seat belt that comes along with it, manufacturers haven’t noticed a significant safety improvement because of the additional roll bar.

“First, if a machine has a roll bar, it has to have a seat belt to be a certified CROPS,” Walker explained. “Most contractors are getting on and off the machine so much all day that they don’t take the time to rebuckle their seat belts.

Also, CROPS makes the machine taller, which means it can get hung up on low trees and bushes, Walker added. “During our safety training, we show our employees the maximum slope a walk-behind can take,” Remake explained.

When using zero-turn radius riding mowers, Tucker shared that he never makes a true zero-degree turn, especially on a hill. “Even though riding mowers tend to feel more stable than walk-behinds, they can slip and aren’t as flexible,” Remake explained.

If the site is a high visibility commercial site and needs to be cut, we’ll use a weed eater to do it, but we’ll charge an extra 10 percent for having to mow under these conditions, and most of our customers understand the reason for the extra cost.” When asked about mowing in tough conditions, Kim Kellogg, co-owner with wife Char of Grasshopper Property Maintenance in Millers burg, Ohio, gives this reply: “There are no rainy days, there are no sunny days.

Char Kellogg adds these thoughts about spring mowing, especially this year when the Midwest and East have received more than their share of rain. Char continues, “Real-time radar gives us real-time warning of what’s approaching, and helps us manage crew placement and scheduling.

It helps us decide if we call the guys off, bring them in late in the morning, send them home early, or have them sit in the trucks to wait out a storm if it is a heavy rain or there is thunder and lightning. Char hits the proverbial nail on the head when she says, “This isn’t an industry for sissies.” She gives the following example.

We have actually pushed snow with our WalkerMowers when occasionally we have been caught in a snowstorm while mowing.” There may be other occasions, too, when, ideal mowing conditions are compromised by having to operate on slopes or near embankments.

The following are guidelines to help operators cope with difficult mowing conditions in a safe and productive manner. Both problems can be caused or magnified by cutting too low (restricting airflow under skirt of deck), mowing too fast (excess volume of clippings), and failing to maintain maximum engine revs, which reduces the ability of the blades and deck to either discharge or vacuum the grass.

Walker users can minimize GHS deck clogging by using an optional catcher exhaust screen with larger holes. Problems caused by wet mowing conditions do not end at the discharge chute.

Mowing dry grass or leaves creates a different set of challenges for operators. Overfilling a catcher may cause excess dry material to contact hot engine parts.

Because piles of dry grass and leaves can be combustible, avoid backing or driving the mower into them. A rule of thumb to follow in wet, dry and normal mowing conditions is to empty the catcher completely at the end of the day.

Before attempting the job, walk the area looking for hidden hazards such as holes, debris and soft or unstable ground. When mowing steep areas with any riding mower, slow down and use care, especially when maneuvering, starting and stopping.

(Note: The maximum recommended side slope operating angle for WalkerMowers is 20° or 33% grade; see your Walker Owner’s Manual for an illustration.) For example, a broken transmission drive belt can cause the mower to freewheel down the hill until the Forward Speed Control is moved to the Neutral-Park position.

But there are ways to safely and productively get the job done despite uncooperative weather and other difficult mowing conditions.
