As any child (big or small) will tell you, there’s nothing more exciting than seeing a real life tiger up close and personal. It is also down to the discretion of the zoos as to when they can reopen, as many animal exhibits that take place inside are unavailable for the foreseeable future as they don’t allow for social distancing.
This came after a number of PMs and the Prime Minister’s own father calling for action to be taken so that zoos can reopen, as many have been hit with their own financial crisis since the lockdown started. The lockdown was naturally going to be a real problem for many zoos, as they often rely on visitor fees to keep their sites open.
A spokesperson for Colchester Zoo told the Daily Mirror, “We think that being able to re- open in July would be wonderful but this could go on until September or October, we could not last until then, so to survive we will need to approach banks to help us out.” Similarly, London Zoo is reportedly facing its worst ever financial crisis after closing for the first time since World War Two.
Director Leo Oosterweghel told the Irish Times that the animals are now surprised to see him, saying, “They come up and have a good look. Some countries such as Belgium, Austria, France, Germany, Denmark, Italy and a few areas of Spain are already welcoming back visitors into their zoos with social distancing measures in place.
It’s likely that other countries in Europe, including the UK, would follow suit with this as they have laid out similar plans for reopening other non-essential services. Since they’re outside establishments, scientists are more confident about people upholding the social distancing regulations and the virus not spreading so quickly.
The ABQ BioPark will continue using the same precautions that have been in place since its initial reopening in June. Indoor areas like the Penguin Chill and reptiles have capacity limits; a Zoo ticket does not guarantee entry to these exhibits.
The Botanic Garden is open Wednesdays-Sundays from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. The ABQ BioPark continues using the same precautions that have been in place since its initial reopening in June.
To minimize face-to-face contact, tickets for the Zoo and Botanic Garden must be purchased online in advance. On October 26 the City’s Cultural Services Department announced that the ABQ BioPark Zoo and Botanic Garden, Albuquerque Museum, and Anderson Arezzo Albuquerque Balloon Museum will restrict online ticket sales to New Mexico residents only as an additional COVID-19 precaution.
To ensure social distancing between guests, we are limiting the number of timed tickets available each day. All guests will be required to wear face masks per the executive order of the Governor of New Mexico.

During our more-than two month closure in early 2020, the ABQ BioPark and its nonprofit support organization, the New Mexico BioPark Society, missed out on revenue from admissions, the gross receipts tax, special events such as Run for the Zoo and food, beverage and merchandise sales.
However, the BioPark is proud that all of our animals continued to receive the same level of care, food and veterinary support as always. All guests, including Zoo members, must now reserve free, timed tickets prior to visiting.

The GW Zoo, which has a big focus Netflix’s new series Tiger King, is now called the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park, and it’s still going strong under new ownership. To get there, you’ll be passing by the Lexington Wildlife Management Area if you’re driving from Oklahoma City.
Zooming into the map, you can see that it’s very close to the Crossroads RV Park and the Ar buckle Pentecostal Church, across the highway from Elite Motor Sports. When you drive up, there’s a wooden fence with Exotic Animal Park painted on the side.

But those concerns completely vanished when I saw the segment on Doc Angle, Joe’s Messiah and role model. Regardless, Lauren and I remain committed to the care of hundreds of animals who rely on us to keep them safe and healthy.
It has exhausted the small fortune I once held, I even sold my Ferrari to help build our animals larger enclosures. I will always believe that our biggest contribution to the animal kingdom was helping the feds take down monsters like Joe Exotic and Tim Stark.
No zoo we could ever build will have the positive impact of taking out the nation’s largest tiger cub traffickers. Lauren and I are forging on, every day to complete a new facility that can provide our animals with more space, far away from “The Curse of Joe Exotic.
