Ron DeSantis appointed Andrea K. Gotten of Tunnel to the judgeship instead. Washington defeated Renzo by 52% of the vote to 48% in the August primary, which decided the race.

It’s always been a passion of mine to be a judge so, hey, I’ve got this opportunity now.” Washington’s victory will give the 7th Circuit another minority judge.

Washington will be the circuit’s first judge of African-American and South Korean heritage. She said she will be the first African-American judge ever in Putnam County, where she will preside over a unified family court docket.

Washington will be joined on the circuit bench by Joan Anthony, an African-American Daytona Beach attorney, who defeated Dan Hilbert, a St. Augustine attorney, for an open circuit seat in November. Anthony will be the first African-American judge on full-time assignment in St. Johns County, where she will preside over a unified-family-court docket, according to Mark Weinberg, court administrator for the 7th Circuit.

“There’s never been an African American judge in St. Johns or Putnam counties, so it’s evident that things are changing,” Washington said. County Judge Dawn Fields, who is African-American, retired on December 31, 2020.

“But you can’t operate from a place, whether it’s hatred, whether it's being angry, you have to kind of force yourself to be that change that you want to see in the world.” She said that advice was evident in the support she received from voters, especially in Volusia County, Washington said.

Washington beat Renzo in Volusia County by 56% to 44% and a margin of 12,609 votes. That winning margin in the county made a big difference in the race.

The victory in the polls was a great feeling after all the trips to Tallahassee which had ended in disappointment. She also credited her husband, Alfred Washington Jr., who is an attorney with Rue and Infra, for his support.

“Imagine being the husband of a person who goes to Tallahassee 10 times and doesn’t get an appointment,” Washington said. © Provided by Daytona Beach News-Journal Candidates for Circuit Judge, Group 27, are Bryan Renzo and Alicia Washington.

The judge possessed all the tenets that I respected and strived for as a professional, including a positive judicial demeanor. I returned to college and found I enjoyed political science and philosophy classes more than microbiology.

The law allows us to enjoy the freedoms this country offers while still setting the parameters needed to maintain peace and civility. I think it is important for judges to become active volunteers in our community in order to understand and represent all of our citizens.

That preserves the integrity of the justice system, not keeping a ledger of what the effects, versus intent, are. I will closely examine the specific facts of each case; the impact on the victim; the victim's wishes; the prior history of the defendant; and whether there is a likelihood that the offender could be rehabilitated with alternative treatment and sanctions which would use tax dollars more efficiently.
